Reddit now drives a bigger share of ChatGPT citations than backlinks do. And Google is reportedly preparing an update aimed specifically at low-effort AI content within the next several months, not AI-assisted content in general.

A client asked us last week why their traffic kept falling even though their rankings looked fine. The answer is the same one we’re giving most clients right now: the click isn’t happening anymore. AI Overviews are answering the question directly on the results page, and about 68% of U.S. searches now end without a single click to any website. Ranking well no longer guarantees a visit. Here is what’s actually changed this month, and what to do about it.

Google’s New “Preferred Sources” Badge

Google quietly shipped a feature that most sites haven’t touched yet: a preferred-sources submission that directly increases the odds of being cited inside AI Overviews, AI Mode, Top Stories, and Google Discover. It’s documented, it’s free, and it’s a one-time technical change. Take Google’s specified markup, add it to your site, and you’re in the pool of sources the AI Overview system draws from when it assembles an answer in your space.

This is the single highest-leverage item on most sites’ SEO to-do list right now precisely because so few competitors have done it yet.

Reddit Now Outranks Backlinks for AI Citations

People aren’t only typing into Google anymore. They’re asking ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity directly and trusting whatever comes back. That shift favors a different set of signals than classic SEO ever did. Reddit accounts for a larger share of ChatGPT citations than backlinks do at this point, according to recent citation-tracking data. Having a real, useful presence in the subreddits your customers actually read is now a search visibility tactic, not just a community one.

Two other things move the needle here that didn’t matter as much a year ago: content that states its answer clearly in the first 40 to 60 words under each heading, and a named author with real, checkable credentials, not “Admin” or “Team.” Both are things AI systems can parse and trust; both are things classic SEO never rewarded directly.

Google Is Reportedly Preparing to Crack Down on AI Content

Signals from inside Google’s search team point to an AI-content-focused update landing within the next several months. The pattern industry watchers are flagging: recent spam updates look like early tests for a broader system aimed specifically at regurgitated, low-effort AI text, the kind with no original insight or firsthand experience behind it. Google’s own documentation still says AI-assisted content is fine. The distinction that’s about to matter more is between “AI helped me write this” and “AI wrote this and nobody checked it.”

For any site publishing AI-assisted content regularly, the practical move is the same one we tell every client: treat the AI draft as a starting point, not a finished piece. Add real data, real examples, and an editor who actually knows the subject.

What to Do This Month

If you do nothing else from this piece: add Google’s preferred-sources markup, make sure your top pages answer their core question in the first two sentences, and put a real name and real credentials on anything AI-assisted before it publishes. Those three changes cost almost nothing and directly target where AI Overviews and AEO citations are decided right now.

AI Overviews and AEO: Why 68% of Searches Now End Without a Click TL;DR Google shipped a Preferred Sources badge that directly increases your odds of being cited in AI…

[2

post-168","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-seo-search
["GET
